mini cancun

tonight's cancun get-together was a result of saturday's bday party for kruti.. we couldn't finish our yummy indian food then, so decided we to take care of that today at janhavi's.. it was really nice to catch up and gossip.. we did a lot of 'facebooking' too.. this is probably another kellogg term.. you wanna find someone on our database, just facebook him/her :) i just realised there are tons of people i haven't even seen (or at least i don't recognise).. it was kinda fun listening different opinions from the guys' and the girls' sides.. oh, and they had a surprise cake for my belated bday too~ so nice of them.. was gonna head home after that but our friends successfully talked us into going for a couple drinks..hehe ended up at prarie moon and met up with more kellogg crowd.. met a girl who actually worked at bbl for a while.. small world indeed! and she said she loved bkk.. eating and shopping is just awesome.. of course! who wouldn't love bkk for those reasons ;)

celebrating love?

so here we are on feb 14.. thinking back to the old days when i was still in school.. we used to give friends little heart-shaped stickers, stuck them onto our bags, purses, pencil boxes, shirts and all sorts of things.. some of them, as i recall, i stuck onto the back of my shirt collar and so people wouldn't see unless i show them.. was that because they were special friends, i cannot remember.. but anyways, later on you no longer give (and receive) stickers.. it became valentine cards, roses, chocolates, teddybears, etc.. well, not that i always got those but in general people give those type of gifts, right? never had i seriously wondered about the origin of the celebration on such day.. so i was browsing online, and not surprisingly found many stories related to the root of this.. one is related to ancient Rome's Lupercalia festival when girls' names were drawn to become the companion of a guy, i presume in marriage.. but then later on the emperor decided to ban marriage because he wanted men in the army.. valentine was a priest who secretly wed couples, and was later caught and beheaded.. tragic story isn't it? and the festival transformed into a celebration for gods and saints, and st. valentine was chosen.. and there you go, valentine's day.. but what do you know.. it's just a story.. (i think there's more to it but i'm just too lazy hehe)

so why is it a special occasion? some question the rationale of this celebration.. is it important that we need to show 'special' love on this day, when we should be giving love every day? putting it that way, then of course nothing makes this day different from any other day.. but then i wonder why you celebrate other occasions.. birthdays for example.. why does it matter that exactly X years ago you were born and so it makes that day more special than every day that you have lived and will live? or why do you go to church or temples on religious occasions when you should do good deeds and pray without a reason? father's day, mother's day, even 'wan dek' or children's day.. why do people make a big deal out of them? my kind of answer is, because it creates a sense of recognition and importance, and not just within you but showing it to the public.. we celebrate many occasions because those people involved actually feel happy and fulfilled to give as well as receive.. i will not argue that there are people who do that every day, but having these special days make it known to others that these things are important to you.. will we love others less without a valentine's day? of course not. yet, having it does bring smiles and joy to millions of people all around.. so why bother searching for a reason to celebrate, when sometimes the rationale does not matter but rather the outcome..

all in all, happy valentine's anyway!

movie that made me scream

after all the midterms, it is time to relax and do something enjoyable.. for a movie fan, of course, i hardly say no to any movie invitation.. my favourite kind of entertainment :) so we decided upon final destination 3.. went with ying, kukkuk, and keith.. i remembered the first one pretty well, but the 2nd one vaguely.. so i went in with almost no expectation whatsoever, only thinking that there'll be a lot of people dying.. little did i know that all the death scenes would be so disgusting! i shouldn't go into details, but i literally screamed when they were dying.. yuck! bottom line is, if you like intense movies with a lot of visual, this would be one good choice.. and for those who enjoy rollercoasters, those who go to tanning spas, those who drive convertibles, those who work with machinery tools (especially nail guns), regular gym goers (using a lot of weight machines), and those who take subways.. you might consider skipping this one.. hehe..

exams exams v.2

exams exams

and midterm exam period is about to be over.. i'm having my last one later this evening - one of the subjects i have trouble preparing for, as it appears i'd have to rely on my 'mua' skills a lot.. two results are out so far, so glad that at least i'm (a tiny teenie little bit) above mean for fin II.. hehe.. for ops, it should be in my mailbox.. people got it already but mine was missing! i wrote to professor and she replied that her secretary couldn't find my lastname.. hmm.. i don't know why that's so difficult.. it just starts with an "s" hehe.. hope that's not a bad sign :: it's snowing outside.. wonder if they can say snowing cats & dogs (like how they describe the rain) ^_^ but i prefer it to snow a lot at one time.. make everything white, even for the first day or two.. and from experience it is worst when the thing that falls is neither snow nor rain - like hybrid version.. somehow the middle path concept is not so applicable in this case..

let's bid

finally it's the end of the quiet weekend.. i never realised it could get so quiet around here.. if i were to stay alone i'd prolly go mute hehe.. i started writing this wanting to talk about the interviews i just had, which i totally blew, but on the second thought i should just let it go and look forward to the rest half of the quarter dee kwa.. it's bidding time again, and i still have no idea what course to bid for spring.. for those who wonder, we have to compete for classes here.. so each year you're given a limited amount of points you can use to bid for what course you wanna take.. first years get 2000 cuz we bid for 2 quarters; second years get 3000.. if you go for something really popular, mostly b/c of the professor, then you have to bet how high it can go.. the cost to you is the points bid by the last person who get into the class.. so if everyone thinks alike, then you can save a lot of points.. on the other hand if the class is not full, then u only waste one point - it's free basically.. this is kinda fun actually, given that i got all my classes the last time and still have a lot left for this round :) i was lucky, the good ones i got which is the later section cost me less than the morning section.. people wanna wake up early or what?!?! (i will never take 830am class again! definitely not a morning person!) later i found out some of them have conflicts wt other classes.. so there you go, bidding strategy.. b-school teaches you more than you think :P

yi-sib-hok

this year my birthday falls right in the middle of midterm exams and interviews.. how perfect timing! i had fin 2 exam yesterday which was so bad.. then i had to prepare for ops today - hadn't studied for it at all until one day before exam. so i planned to dedicate the whole thursday afternoon (and night) for ops.. didn't know that my plan would cause trouble for my lovely friends who were planning me a birthday surprise..hehe. i wanted to stay at school after my rehearsal, so i told p'nut that i'd be going home late.. i headed to the qsr after practice, and while i was going in i heard some thai talking in the back so i turned and saw p'mai coming out of the small study room nearby.. i asked whom he was talking with, but got accused of being "hoo-fard" hmm.. anyways, i let that go.. and then another weird thing - p'mai said dump your things and come out to "mouth" outside.. what could be such a 'hot' issue to talk about now?!?! and so i went out, and he led to that same study room (which was totally dark inside), and then the door opened and there it was, everyone shouting "surprise!" and a birthday cake right in front of me :) so so unexpected!! it was the best surprise really.. i later heard about all the moments that the secret almost got revealed b/c of me haha.. like when tempy came to get the car and i happened to be home, so i just asked a very normal question about where he was going (he was gonna get the cake then), and our brilliant consultant just simply came up with "going to the bank" excuse and he got away just like that hehe.. and when i wanted to stay at school too.. of all the days, i just have to pick today.. initially they planned to have this surprise at home.. and i just messed it all up for everyone.. :P sorry guys! thanks for going thru all the trouble na.. at least i got a very cute 'blackboard bday card' that u can't give at home ieie..
